Washu-chan is described as "the greatest mad scientist the galaxy has
ever known". Yet she asks Tenchi to call her "Washu-chan", literally,
"Little Washu". Why exactly is she a Goddess? Because she's a smart,
funny, and assertive anime woman. And, ok, so her hair's not exactly
red! So sue me! It's pink---a shade of red!
I think it's pretty telling that her Ani-Mayhem card gives her the
following quote: "I'm the greatest mad scientist in the galaxy and I'm
cute, too!" She has her act together and she knows what she wants.
One more note about Washu: I was watching the Tenchi TV series (kindly
released by Pioneer) and when Washu first appears, she has two little
dolls on her shoulders that act like her cheerleaders. Well, I guess if
you're a mad scientist, you get to do these things.

Beverly was the first example I ever saw on TV of a woman who'd combined
her job with her family. Her priorities are in two places, yet she
balances them beautifully. Also, she manages to balance her personal
life as well, coping with the death of her husband and raising a son all
alone. Besides, she's beautiful!
A distressing thing, however, is the minimal roles that both she and
Counselor Troi get in the latest movies. Each of them had about one
scene where the actress (Gates McFadden and Marina Sirtis, respecitvely)
got to strut her stuff. Compare this to the roles that all the main
characters had. Even Lily, the human character, had maybe two major
scenes and that was it. What's going on here? Why are we wasting such
talented roles and characters?
End of Ranting.
Scully is the perfect example of a professional womyn - intelligent,
focused, calm, and resourceful. While I do love the rampant UST between
Mulder and her, I am somehow far happier to have her as a strong, single
woman. Actually, it was watching her that made me think about changing
my major to pre-med/biology (for five seconds...).
Scully is also a fully developed character in her own right. I think
that one of the most interesting episodes that showed her character was
"One Breath", where we literally got to see what was going on in her
mind. All the people who'd influenced her were there, speaking,
pleading, but it was Scully's own decision in the end to come back to
life. I think this is quite telling, as well as powerful. Scully
realizes that if other people make her, she can still make herself.
Here
is good introduction as to why exactly Dana Scully is a Goddess. It has
a nice collection of images, and up to date information. Furthermore, it
proposes the novel theory that Gillian Anderson and Dana Scully are one
person...
And here
is a nicely designed page that is a tribute to Dana Scully. It's
nicely laid out, and contains a user-friendly interface that's fun to
look at, as well as to use.
Finally, a page
for
relationshippers. Yes, I admit it...even though I'd like them to wait
until the end of the series, I would like to see Mulder and Scully end up
together.
